Adobe Garamond Pro and Franklin Gothic URW Compositions

Adobe Garamond Pro and Franklin Gothic URW Compositions
In my Art 230 Typography we were tasked to design a composition that had these requirements for the typefaces Adobe Garamond Pro and Franklin Gothic URW:
- Each thumbnail/composition should include 5-9 letters
- The thumbnails should be done in proportion to the finished size.
- At least 2 black and 2 white letters should both be used in each composition. (the additional 1-5 letters can be black or white)

Pencil Drawn Sketches
Digital Sketches in Adobe Illustrator
After revising my digital sketches for each typeface I settled on one composition for each typeface.
Adobe Garamond is a serif typeface that balances a classic clean look. For my composition I arranged the letters and numbers to showcase their elegant serifs and classic strokes. My focus was for the number four’s slope and the Z’s slope to align to create a nice negative space in between. The slopes complement each other and provide a sense of balance to the composition. The numbers I chose were meant to highlight the serifs of the typeface. The number seven has similar angles to the Z and the serif of a T. Each item in the composition mingles well together to make a sharp clean look.
Franklin Gothic URW is a sans-serif typeface that celebrates straight block-like strokes. For my composition I emphasized these strokes by making dramatic angles and large negative spaces. The letters K and I provide striking angles that create a nice negative space. Negative spaces are areas where the composition is void of a letter or number. These spaces allow the eyes to rest and focus more on parts that do have purposefully placed letters and numbers. Franklin Gothic URW is a wonderful typeface that lends itself to overlapping which creates interesting spaces within the letters and numbers.
